It's akin to starting from scratch, feeling that chaos when you're at ground zero. When a child is born, they know nothing; they begin experiencing everything, finding thrill in the simplest of things, whether it's seeing grass for the first time or taking those initial steps. It takes time for them to learn and understand what life is all about.
When I was learning the guitar, I often found myself in that frustrating zone where progress seemed elusive. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't master that one chord. One day, I sought advice from Harshit bhaiya, the former club head of Kafila and an accomplished guitar player. He said, "Once you've mastered the guitar, you'll miss the excitement of learning." It reminded me of what J Cole once said: "There's beauty in the struggle and ugliness in success." I resonate with that deeply.
Similarly, when I started college, I was like that introverted child again. I knew nothing about how to interact with people. Even though I had classmates I'd known since grade 1, I never ventured out of my comfort zone to make new friends. But in college, I wanted to challenge myself in every aspect. I wanted to improve my communication skills and learn how to connect with others.
I vividly recall the first communication skills class in college. The teacher asked for volunteers to introduce themselves on stage. The room fell silent, but a voice inside me urged, "Priyanshu, raise your hand." Numb with nervousness, I was the first to raise my hand. As I stood in front of the class, my hands trembled, and I stumbled over my words multiple times. Yet, I completed the task assigned. That evening, I returned home and cried, vowing to improve.
From then on, I seized every opportunity to speak up, ensuring I was the first to volunteer. A year later, I interviewed for the position of club coordinator and secured it. Even now, when I talk to new people, I feel those familiar nerves. But I've come to embrace that feeling because it signifies taking risks and stepping out of my comfort zone.
Embarking on new experiences in life often makes you feel inadequate initially. When you move to a new city, everything seems unfamiliar. But instead of running away, you persevere. With time, you begin to recognize patterns and familiarize yourself with the surroundings. The same applies to learning new skills or making new friends. Initially, it may feel daunting and out of place, but if you hang on and give it time, you'll improve and eventually master it.
So, take that first step, embrace the challenge, and remember: the journey of learning is as rewarding as the destination.
